1&1 AG Engages in New Spectrum Allocation Consultation
On May 13, 2024, the Federal Network Agency published a consultation concerning the forthcoming allocation of low and mid-band spectrum frequencies. This consultation impacts major operators including Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefónica. It proposes the extension of existing frequency usage rights and ties the extensions to Telefónica's obligation to continue transferring 2x10 MHz of mid-band spectrum to 1&1 AG.
Additionally, the incumbent network operators are required to make at least 2x5 MHz of their low-band spectrum available for joint use with 1&1. This would be set on fair terms and aims to support 1&1's efforts in offering reliable services to its 12 million customers.
Ralph Dommermuth, CEO of 1&1, emphasized the importance of acquiring a substantial amount of frequency under market conditions to expand the company's 5G network using Open RAN technology. This will enhance their network's competitiveness and capability to meet customer demands.
