2025 funding for the reconstruction of Cree camps

The Cree Trappers Association (CTA), the Cree Hunters' Economic Security Board (OSECC), and 16 mining companies have announced the approval of funding for the continued reconstruction of camps burned during the 2023 wildfires. A total of $750,000 has been initially allocated to the Reconstruction Initiative Fund, with contributions from the OSECC and partner companies.

In 2024, a camp replacement program rebuilt 50 sites. The $600,000 in funding will support the continuation of this project in 2025. Officials emphasize the importance of these efforts in enabling Cree hunters to resume their traditional activities.

The companies' commitment, as Normand Champigny points out, will continue with additional funding planned for 2026. The reconstruction of the camps is an essential step for the return of hunters to the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James territory.
