Call for sustainable funding to fight malaria in Africa
The African Union's 2025 report reveals a stagnation in the fight against malaria, with 270.8 million cases and nearly 600,000 deaths, representing 96% of global cases. Faced with reduced funding and a 70% decline in official development assistance (ODA), African leaders are calling for urgent mobilization at the 39th African Union Summit. They emphasize the need to renew the World Bank's Malaria Support Program. This program previously mobilized over one billion dollars, highlighting the importance of resources to prevent a massive resurgence of the disease.
Local initiatives, such as the production of mosquito nets and antimalarial treatments in Nigeria, are strengthening health sovereignty. Tanzania plays a key role with the Ifakara Health Institute, developing innovative technologies to curb malaria. Leaders are calling for increased investment to sustain progress and ensure resilient health systems, which are essential for a malaria-free future in Africa.
