AGRANA Shuts Down Sugar Production in Austria and Czech Republic
AGRANA has announced the cessation of sugar production at its Leopoldsdorf site in Austria and Hrušovany site in the Czech Republic. This decision follows the company's strategic shift to consolidate Austrian production in Tulln, enhancing site resilience amid economic challenges. The company aims to strengthen its long-term competitiveness by focusing on domestically produced sugar within Austria.
Rising production costs, decreased EU sugar consumption, and market liberalisation have rendered dual-site operations economically unviable. Consequently, 270 employees will be affected, with retraining and support packages offered.
Consolidating in Tulln ensures full capacity utilisation and competitive production for the Austrian market. AGRANA emphasizes its commitment to regional sugar production and partnerships with local beet farmers.
