Aperam BioEnergia launches a partnership with Patch: 15,000 tonnes of CO2 offset

The Aperam BioEnergia unit, part of Aperam's Recycling & Renewables Division and located in Brazil, recently entered into a partnership with Patch, a global platform connecting buyers and sellers of carbon credits. This new partnership enabled the sale of 15,000 metric tons of biochar, contributing to carbon offsetting on the voluntary market. Since January of this year, Aperam has started deliveries through Patch, attesting to the removal of 8.5 thousand tonnes of CO2e. The second tranche, representing 6.5 thousand tonnes of suppression, was delivered in March.

These certificates come from the use of biochar in the soils of Aperam BioEnergia's planted forests, in the Jequitinhonha Valley. Biochar, a substance similar to charcoal obtained by burning agricultural or forestry waste without oxygen, can store atmospheric carbon for hundreds or even thousands of years. Tim di Maulo, CEO of Aperam, highlights the integration of biochar into the circular economy and Aperam's entry into the carbon offset market as examples of developing the solutions needed for the future economy.
