Decarbonisation: A Competitive Advantage for European SMEs by 2026

As per the 2026 Argos-BCG Climate Transition Barometer, more than half of European SMEs and mid-caps find a competitive edge in decarbonisation, marking a substantial increase since 2023. Despite uncertain economic and geopolitical climates, 88% of these companies maintain a strong focus on reducing emissions. Conducted across 750 executives, the study underscores a shift from environmental priority to strategic competitiveness.

Structural business transformations are evident, with 54% of firms reworking their models for lower emissions. Decarbonisation becomes a value creation opportunity for 73% of companies, with many seeing energy efficiency and new market gains. However, financial constraints challenge 58% of businesses, highlighting the need for appropriate funding to continue these initiatives.

The UK's unique post-Brexit regulatory landscape affects its decarbonisation pace, although some firms have made strides in climate adaptation. Overall, the barometer reveals that strategic decarbonisation is now crucial for competitiveness and long-term business transformation.
