Aurubis AG: Largest Planned Maintenance Shutdown at Aurubis Hamburg Plant Successfully Concluded

Aurubis AG has concluded the largest maintenance shutdown in its history at the Hamburg site. The shutdown involved around 500 individual tasks with a budget of approximately €95 million for maintenance and upgrades. Key improvements included hydrogen-ready anode furnaces and expansion of carbon-free industrial heat.

Around 2,000 people participated, including 1,500 workers from partner companies. Markus Kramer, Chief Transformation Officer, highlighted the focus on occupational health and safety. The project also involved extensive efficiency and stability improvements, setting the stage for longer intervals between shutdowns.

The company installed hydrogen-ready anode furnaces, a strategic project for carbon-neutral production. This €40 million investment is expected to prevent at least 5,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Aurubis also invested approximately €100 million to expand carbon-free industrial heat for Hamburg households, expected to heat up to 28,000 homes and avoid 120,000 tons of CO2 annually. The project is part of the Living Lab Northern Germany initiative.
