AustriaEnergy International GmbH Advances Chile's Largest Green Hydrogen/Ammonia Project
Vienna, 06.08.2024 – AustriaEnergy International GmbH has achieved a key milestone with Chile's largest green hydrogen/green ammonia project. Following three and a half years of preparations, it has successfully submitted the first phase for environmental impact assessment to the Chilean environmental authority. Approval is expected by Q4 2025. With an investment of USD 11 billion, it is the largest project to undergo such an assessment in Chile.
The first phase includes a seawater desalination plant, a 1.4-gigawatt wind farm, a process plant for hydrogen and ammonia production, an interim storage facility, and a multi-purpose port. The facility will produce 270,000 tons of hydrogen annually, converted into 1.3 million tons of ammonia. Construction is slated to start in early 2027, with operations beginning in late 2030.
The second phase includes a 2.1-gigawatt wind farm, with submission for environmental assessment planned for Q1 2026. The project is expected to be built over six years and operated for 50 years.
The project is a joint venture involving AustriaEnergy (24.5%), ÖKO Wind (24.5%), and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP; 51%). AustriaEnergy oversees technical approval, while CIP manages financing and construction.
