Electric vehicles on the rise in Switzerland, but economic uncertainties persist

In the first half of 2025, the Swiss commercial vehicle market saw a 17.2% decline in registrations, with 18,589 new vehicles registered compared to 22,440 in 2024. The decline is attributable to economic uncertainties and a changing regulatory framework. Tighter CO₂ limits and the heavy goods vehicle tax (HGVT) are hampering investment.

All segments, including motorhomes, are affected, while the share of electric trucks is growing significantly. Their share reached 17.2% compared to 8.4% in 2024. For light commercial vehicles, the market share of electric cars has also increased to 10.7%.

Thomas Rücker, CEO of auto-suisse, expressed mixed feelings about these developments. He emphasized the need to ensure favorable conditions to encourage the adoption of low-emission vehicles. A moderate market recovery is anticipated in the second half of the year, with forecasts of 28,000 light commercial vehicles and 3,900 heavy goods vehicles.
