Winning an Olympic gold medal is the pinnacle of athletic achievement and certain states have produced more gold medalists. The top three are California (480), New York (216), and Ohio (128). California also leads in the number of athletes participating, with 1,394 athletes, followed by New York (823) and Pennsylvania (521).
