BlackBerry and Canada Boost Cybersecurity in Southeast Asia
BlackBerry Limited, in collaboration with the Canadian government and Toronto Metropolitan University, has announced a $3.9 million CAD investment in Malaysia's Cybersecurity Center of Excellence. This initiative, discussed at the APEC Leaders' Summit, aims to enhance cyber resilience in Southeast Asia by offering comprehensive training programs and threat intelligence initiatives. The focus includes empowering women and plans to train 3,500 cyber-defenders from Malaysia and ASEAN countries.
Canada's contribution will support the design and delivery of cybersecurity courses, providing diversity-focused tracks at Malaysia's CCoE in Cyberjaya. The initiative aims to help participants secure in-demand roles and foster a hub for cybersecurity intelligence sharing. The government's support extends to scholarships and bursaries, helping learners attain industry-recognized certifications.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized the strategic importance of cybersecurity within Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy, highlighting the need for international cooperation. BlackBerry's CEO, John Giamatteo, acknowledged the collaboration's role in advancing cyber workforce capabilities in the region not only through training but as a strategic location for addressing cyber threats.
