Blue Elephant Energy Begins Construction of First BESS in Germany

Hamburg-based Blue Elephant Energy GmbH (BEE) has started building its first battery energy storage system (BESS) in Germany. The facility, with a capacity of around 12 MW, began construction in mid-August 2024. The project is located in Merseburg and is expected to be operational by Q4 2024. Goldbeck Solar, a German photovoltaic specialist, is handling the installation. The financing is being provided by Deutsche Kreditbank AG (DKB), and the project is marketed by Munich's Entrix.

Key stakeholders see this development as significant for the energy transition in Germany. "Realising the first battery storage system with BEE is an important contribution to grid congestion," said Patrick Pokorny, Head of BESS at Goldbeck Solar. Matthias Burger from DKB highlights the project as an example of how storage expansion can be economically driven. Tim Kallas, CIO of BEE, also emphasized that this milestone will aid in the flexibilisation of electricity grids, with more projects to follow.
