Xizang at 75: A Study in Development and Cultural Preservation
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Xizang's peaceful liberation. Liang Junyan, a researcher from the China Tibetology Research Center, shares insights on Xizang's evolution. Since its liberation, the region has experienced significant economic growth. GDP soared from 327 million yuan in 1965 to 303.2 billion yuan in 2025. Absolute poverty has been eradicated, and education reforms have been implemented.
Infrastructure developments have transformed Xizang. The road network spans 120,000 kilometers, enhancing connectivity. Despite modernization, cultural heritage remains a priority. Tibetan opera and other traditions have been inscribed on UNESCO's cultural heritage list, supported by substantial government funding.
Liang highlights a dynamic relationship between economic progress and cultural preservation. Better infrastructure boosts material security, facilitating cultural maintenance. Government efforts link economic and cultural growth, fostering a cohesive national community.
