Sirolimus-Coated Balloon Matches Drug-Eluting Stent at One Year
Recent results from the TRANSFORM II trial reveal that the MagicTouch Sirolimus Coated Balloon (SCB) strategy is comparable to everolimus-eluting stents (EES) for treating de novo coronary artery disease. Conducted in 11 countries, the trial involved 1,842 patients and demonstrated a Target Lesion Failure rate of 2.1% for SCB compared to 2.4% for EES. No significant differences in major adverse events were noted between the two groups, and SCB required less bailout stenting.
Led by Dr. Bernardo Cortese, findings suggest a paradigm shift in percutaneous coronary intervention practices, with SCB offering a viable alternative to permanent metal stents. The trial was sponsored by Fondazione Ricerca e Innovazione Cardiovascolare with support from Concept Medical, although the company did not influence trial design or reporting.
