Engie and Belgian Government Finalize Nuclear Agreement

On March 14, 2025, ENGIE and the Belgian government finalized an agreement concerning the extension of the Tihange 3 and Doel 4 nuclear reactors by ten years. This includes the transfer of nuclear waste responsibility to the government.
This agreement follows the European Commission's approval on February 21, 2025. It triggered the payment of the first instalment for transferring liability for nuclear waste and spent fuel. A second instalment is due when the reactors restart in November 2025.
As part of the deal, ENGIE is relieved of all future nuclear waste treatment costs. The reactors will operate under a joint venture between ENGIE and the Belgian State, with a balanced risk-sharing mechanism.
