ENGIE has announced the acquisition of its first biomethane production unit in Belgium, marking a significant expansion of its presence in the European biomethane market. The newly acquired facility, located in Bree, will produce 68 GWh of biomethane annually, meeting the energy needs of 6,000 households. This acquisition aligns with ENGIE's goal to generate 10 TWh of biomethane annually in Europe.

The plant, operational since 2013, will transition to injecting biomethane into the local gas network starting October 2024. This move follows ENGIE's recent investments in the Netherlands and England and supports its strategy to establish a strong European platform in renewable energy.

Executive Vice President Cécile Prévieu emphasized the importance of this acquisition as a step towards decarbonizing the European economy, reinforcing ENGIE's role in renewable gases and expanding its reach into Belgium, where it already serves 2.7 million customers. This initiative underlines the company's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
