ENGIE Expands Biomethane Production with New Acquisitions in the Netherlands
ENGIE has increased its biomethane production capacity in Europe, marking a significant development within the sector by acquiring two facilities in the Netherlands. This milestone surpasses the 1 TWh annual production capacity threshold for the company in Europe, with these plants located in Hardenberg and Alkmaar.
The Hardenberg and Alkmaar units have capacities of 90 GWh and 47 GWh respectively. They are set for potential expansions to bring their annual outputs to 150 GWh and 94 GWh. With these initiatives, ENGIE consolidates its leadership in the European biomethane market, furthering its established presence that includes recent acquisitions in the UK.
This expansion supports ENGIE's broader strategic goal to achieve a 10 TWh annual production rate of biomethane by 2030. Cécile Prévieu, Executive Vice President responsible for ENGIE's Infrastructure activities, emphasized the pivotal role of renewable gases like biomethane in driving the decarbonization of Europe's economy and its critical contribution to the energy transition.
