Eurofins Scientific Launches Real-Time PCR Assay for Mpox Virus Detection

Eurofins Scientific (EUFI.PA), a leading bioanalytical testing company, has announced the release of its novel PCR assay for the detection of the mpox virus. The Mplex Mpox, Orthopox assay can differentiate mpox from other orthopox viruses like smallpox and cowpox.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control warns that the 2024 mpox outbreak in Africa, which the WHO has classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, may lead to sporadic cases in Europe. Increased testing and monitoring are recommended.

Developed by Gold Standard Diagnostics Frankfurt GmbH, part of the Eurofins group, the assay was validated by Spanish and French health authorities. Despite genome deletions in the MPXV Clade I variant, the assay remains effective.

Eurofins is distributing the new assay globally and has reserved test kits for donation to African health authorities.
