European Support for Carbon Capture Project in Denmark
Air Liquide and Cementir Holding Group have announced their joint project, ACCSION, aiming to significantly reduce carbon emissions at the Aalborg Portland cement plant in Denmark. The ACCSION project is set to become one of Europe's first comprehensive onshore Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) value chains. This initiative has been selected by the European Commission to receive 220 million euros under the EU Innovation Fund, highlighting its significance in addressing CO2 emissions.
The technology involved, Air Liquide's CryocapTM, is designed to capture, purify, and liquefy approximately 95% of CO2 emissions from cement kilns. These emissions will then be stored onshore through new pipeline infrastructure. Set to be operational by the end of 2029, ACCSION aims to avoid 1.5 million tons of CO2 emissions annually.
The project aligns with the EU's goals for climate neutrality by 2050, as emphasized by leaders from both companies. They underscore the importance of collaboration in developing solutions for difficult-to-abate industries like cement production. The European Innovation Fund's support marks a crucial step in the project's development and investment decisions.
