Fermentalg obtains FDA approval for its natural blue colorant

Fermentalg, a company specializing in bio-solutions based on aquatic microorganisms, announced that its natural blue colorant has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). This colorant, marketed under the Everzure™ Galdieria brand by Givaudan, aims to replace the synthetic colorant Blue 1, used in beverages and confectionery, with a sustainably produced alternative.

The dye is obtained by fermenting the microalgae Galdieria sulphuraria, offering full traceability and increased resistance to acidity and heat. The approval comes as the United States is phasing out petrochemical dyes for health reasons.

The first samples are available and mass production will begin in the second half of 2025. Procedures for obtaining approval in Europe and the United Kingdom are underway.
