First Phosphate welcomes the inclusion of phosphorus in Canada's list of critical minerals
First Phosphate Corp. expressed its satisfaction with the addition of phosphorus to Canada's list of critical minerals. Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced the update which also includes high purity iron and silicon metal.
To qualify as a critical mineral, phosphorus must meet certain criteria, such as importance to Canada's economic security and the transition to a sustainable economy. Canada thus joins Ontario, Quebec, the European Union and South Korea in the recognition of phosphorus as a strategic mineral.
First Phosphate, active in the development of phosphate resources in Quebec, sees this recognition as an opportunity to meet the growing demand for cathode materials for lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, necessary for electrification in North America .
