First sustainable toll gantry installed on an Austrian motorway

Kapsch TrafficCom, together with the Austrian road operator Asfinag, announced the installation of the first wooden toll gantry in Carinthia. This ecological gantry uses renewable wood, significantly reducing CO² emissions compared to traditional steel or aluminum models.

The wooden gantry saves 15 tonnes of CO², unlike steel gantry cranes which generate up to 30 tonnes. The gantry complies with all European standards and offers the same performance as traditional gantry cranes. Its structure consists mainly of glued and laminated spruce wood, with an outer layer of weather-resistant larch wood.

The integrated photovoltaic system supplies the gantry with electricity, complemented by a battery storage system to ensure continued functionality, even in bad weather. Installation was completed in one day thanks to its highly prefabricated design.
