Funding Approval for Cabin Reconstruction in James Bay

The Cree Trappers Association (CTA), Cree Hunters Economic Security Board (CHESB), and 16 mining and exploration companies have approved 2025 funding for rebuilding cabins destroyed by 2023 wildfires in Quebec's Eeyou Istchee James Bay territory. This initiative follows a $750,000 commitment announced in 2024 by CHESB and the companies for the Reconstruction Initiative Forest Fires Fund 2023 (RIFFF).

In 2024, the CTA, with partners including the Niskamoon Corporation, launched a program to replace cabins for affected Cree hunters. The CHESB contributed $400,000 and the companies $200,000, with plans for continued funding in 2026.

Leaders from CTA, CHESB, and Quebec Precious Metals Corporation expressed commitment to supporting Cree hunters and securing additional funding. With significant land impact from the fires, rebuilding efforts are central to restoring traditional activities.
