G20 to Launch Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty
The G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro will see the official launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This initiative, championed by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, aims to tackle global hunger by the UN's 2030 deadline. Lula initially introduced the concept during Brazil's G20 presidency, emphasizing its importance alongside poverty eradication.
The issue persists due to factors like natural disasters and conflicts. A UN report highlighted disturbing hunger trends, particularly in Africa. Meanwhile, Brazil, under Lula, saw a reduction in undernourishment through its Brazil Without Hunger program.
China has also contributed by eliminating extreme poverty domestically and supporting international efforts through initiatives like the Belt and Road. Both countries aim to showcase their experiences at the G20, promoting solutions tailored to national conditions. With the G20 representing a significant portion of global GDP, reaching consensus could be pivotal for global action.
