GKN Hoeganaes and First Phosphate: Partnership for LFP Cathodes

Powder metallurgy leader GKN Hoeganaes has joined First Phosphate in a major collaboration to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode active materials. The strategic partnership aims to strengthen the North American supply chain for key components for LFP batteries, which are used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

The project is based on the integration of First Phosphate’s magnetite into GKN’s Ancorsteel process. This innovative process produces pure iron powder, essential for the production of LFP batteries renowned for their reliability and safety. By creating a local production line, the partnership reduces dependence on international supplies.

The first of its kind, this collaboration focuses on the North American market with sustainability and innovation objectives. The anticipated production capacity in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean would reach 400,000 tonnes per year by 2032, supported by advances at Gallatin and Cinnaminson.
