Hapag-Lloyd Reports Strong Performance in First Half of 2024
Hapag-Lloyd concluded the first half of 2024 with a Group EBITDA of USD 2 billion (EUR 1.8 billion). The Group EBIT was USD 0.9 billion (EUR 0.8 billion) and the Group profit was USD 0.8 billion (EUR 0.7 billion). Despite the challenging market conditions post-pandemic, these results exceeded initial expectations due to increased demand and rising spot rates in Q2 2024.
In the Liner Shipping segment, transport volumes rose by 5% to 6.1 million TEU, while revenues dropped by 14% to USD 9.3 billion (EUR 8.6 billion) due to a lower average freight rate. EBITDA for this segment decreased to USD 1.9 billion (EUR 1.8 billion) and EBIT to USD 0.8 billion (EUR 0.8 billion).
The Terminal & Infrastructure segment saw significant growth due to acquired equity stakes, with EBITDA rising to USD 71 million (EUR 66 million) and EBIT to USD 33 million (EUR 31 million). These results reflect the segment's initial establishment in the second half of 2023.
CEO Rolf Habben Jansen highlighted strong demand, fleet expansion, and progress in decarbonizing the fleet as key factors. An upgraded forecast now places Group EBITDA between USD 3.5 to 4.6 billion and Group EBIT between USD 1.3 to 2.4 billion for the year.
