Hapag-Lloyd Secures Long-term Green Methanol Supply
Hapag-Lloyd has signed a long-term agreement with Goldwind to purchase 250,000 tonnes of green methanol annually. This agreement aligns with Hapag-Lloyd's Strategy 2030, which pledges to meet the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree target. The green methanol will be a mix of bio- and e-methanol, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70%. This initiative is set to save up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions yearly, advancing Hapag-Lloyd's goal of net-zero operations by 2045.
Goldwind plans to construct a new green methanol facility in Hinggan League, China, to support this agreement. Early delivery is expected in 2026. This strategic collaboration underscores both companies' commitment to decarbonization and sustainable energy solutions.
The green methanol supply will contribute to powering Hapag-Lloyd's fleet, including the conversion of five 10,100 TEU ships to dual-fuel propulsion systems by 2026. Alongside investments in liquefied natural gas engines, this marks a significant step towards a multi-fuel future in maritime shipping.
