Henkel Establishes Ambitious Net-Zero Targets
Henkel has announced a net-zero roadmap in line with its sustainability goals, aiming to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain. The company plans to cut absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% and scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030, with a target of reducing all scope emissions by 90% by 2045, compared to 2021 levels.
The Science Based Targets initiative has verified these targets, aligning them with the Paris Agreement's climate goals. Henkel's CEO, Carsten Knobel, emphasized the necessity of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The new targets encompass emissions reductions throughout operations, including those from office buildings, logistics, and end-of-life product treatment.
Henkel's strategy includes enhancing energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy use, and promoting low-emission materials in products and packaging. The Climate Connect program aims to engage suppliers in emissions reduction. Despite some emissions being beyond direct control, Henkel emphasizes consumer education on resource-efficient product use.
