HHLA Acquires Majority Stake in Roland Spedition
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) announced on April 23, 2024, its acquisition of a 51% stake in Roland Spedition GmbH, an Austrian intermodal service provider. This strategic move aims to strengthen HHLA's intermodal service offerings and enhance connectivity between the Port of Hamburg and Austria.
The remaining 49% of Roland shares will continue to be held by Christian Gutjahr and Nikolaus Hirnschall, the co-shareholders who have managed Roland since 2005 and will maintain their roles. Founded in 1982, Roland has become a key player in maritime hinterland transport in Austria, moving approximately 130,000 TEU annually and employing around 50 staff across two sites.
The integration of Roland's services into HHLA’s network will offer customers throughout Europe climate-friendly transport solutions. Roland’s co-partners expressed optimism about the future development of their operations and sustainability efforts under HHLA’s ownership. However, the closure of this deal is subject to regulatory approvals related to competition law.
