Holcim Initiates Construction of Innovative Net-Zero Cement Plant in Belgium
Holcim has commenced the groundbreaking of its GO4ZERO plant in Obourg, Belgium, projected to produce 2 million tons of net-zero cement annually by 2029. The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner for Climate Action. This plant represents a significant step towards decarbonizing the construction sector in Europe, aligning with the European Green Deal’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
The GO4ZERO project, with an investment exceeding EUR 500 million, is set to radically transform cement manufacturing. The initiative will utilize over 95% alternative fuels for energy and incorporate over 30% partly decarbonized alternative raw materials from industrial waste, promoting circularity. This plant will notably reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2027 and feature Europe’s largest floating solar panel installation. Partnering with Air Liquide, Holcim has secured EUR 230 million from the Innovation Fund, backed by the EU Emissions Trading System.
Prime Minister Alexander De Croo praised the project for embodying Belgium's vision of fostering a sustainable industrial future in Europe. Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra highlighted the significance of the project in deploying innovative, low-carbon technologies across Europe. Holcim CEO Miljan Gutovic emphasized that the project is pivotal for Holcim’s strategy to deliver fully decarbonized cement across Europe by 2030, with the operation designed to capture over 5 million tons of CO2 annually.
