How Vegan Diets Impact Dog Health: New Study Unveiled
Pet food consumes at least 9% of all livestock globally, rising to 20% in nations like the US. Recent findings highlight the environmental benefits of vegan pet diets. However, the impact on dog health remains a crucial question.
Dogs, naturally omnivorous, can consume vegan dog food made from plants, minerals, and synthetic ingredients. By 2024, 10 scientific studies showed positive health outcomes in vegan-fed dogs, earning the British Veterinary Association's endorsement. Yet, a comprehensive evaluation of health benefits considering factors like age and breed was lacking.
Veterinary Professor Andrew Knight addressed this gap in 2024. Analyzing 2,536 dogs, 336 of which were vegan-fed, his study revealed significant health improvements. Vegan-fed dogs showed reduced illness occurrences and less need for medication. Health assessment by owners and vets also indicated better outcomes, with illness reductions between 14%-51%.
Notably, the odds of six specific health disorders, including weight and gastrointestinal issues, fell by 50%-61% in vegan-fed dogs. Among 22 common health disorders, dogs on conventional meat diets showed a 49% illness rate compared to 36% for vegan-fed dogs.
Prof. Knight remarked, "Dogs fed vegan diets had the best health outcomes, aligning with prior studies. Nutritionally-sound vegan diets also offer substantial environmental benefits. However, care should be taken to ensure nutritional adequacy from reputable food sources."
