Humphrey Kariuki Named IUCN Patron of Nature
At the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, Humphrey Kariuki was announced as the newest Patron of Nature by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This historic appointment makes Kariuki the first African to receive this recognition, highlighting his leadership in conservation and sustainable development across Africa. Kariuki, who has a long-standing commitment to wildlife conservation in Kenya, expressed his honor and views this role as a tribute to Africa's place in global conservation efforts.
Kariuki, a prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist, is known for his work with the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy. His efforts are most notable in the breeding and rewilding of the critically endangered Mountain bongo. Beyond species recovery, he advocates for environmental restoration and eco-livelihoods, linking environmental protection with economic growth through ecotourism, sustainable farming, and forestry. The IUCN Patrons of Nature program, established in 2010, unites leaders working towards biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource use.
