International Academy of Trial Lawyers Embraces Definition of Rule of Law

In recognition of its 70th anniversary, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, has announced the official adoption of a detailed definition of the Rule of Law. This initiative reflects the Academy's ongoing commitment to uphold and advocate for legal standards that ensure fairness, accessibility, and accountability in the legal system.

The newly approved definition mandates that all individuals, entities, and institutions are subject to established laws, have the right to access legal protections, and can hold others accountable through an independent judiciary system. Clear, accessible and enforceable laws constitute the cornerstone of this definition. These laws must be transparently made, prospective, consistent with global human rights, and free from any biases.

Established in 1954, the Academy limits its U.S. membership to 500 top-performing trial lawyers. It focuses on enhancing professional excellence and integrity within the legal community through various initiatives and reforms. The Rule of Law definition is a significant measure to further these goals on the occasion of its milestone anniversary.
