Kasowitz LLP Highlights Due Process Concerns in Erion Veliaj's Case
Kasowitz LLP has published a report focusing on the due process defects in the ongoing detention and prosecution of Erion Veliaj, Tirana's Mayor. The report updates previous findings from June and October 2025. Two main issues are discussed. First, the prosecution, Albania's SPAK, has hindered Veliaj's access to 60,000 pages of evidence, essential for his defense. Though a Trial Court has ordered SPAK to deliver the evidence and delayed the trial by two weeks, the timeframe challenges Veliaj's ability to thoroughly review it.
Second, SPAK's arguments for Veliaj's detention cite his lobbying, a rationale outside legal grounds, seen as punitive for revealing due process violations. Daniel Fetterman, a Kasowitz partner, describes SPAK's logic as troubling, urging U.S. oversight given its advisory role. Veliaj's legal team includes partners from New York and Washington, D.C.
