Korea and the US Push for the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats

On May 24, 2024, Han Jeoung-ae, a member of the National Assembly of South Korea, welcomed Mr. Genlin, founder of the World Dog Alliance (WDA), back to her office. This was their second meeting, the first being in February, following the passage of South Korea's "Special Act on Prohibition of Dog Meat Consumption."

Representative Han Jeoung-ae is recognized for her dedication to animal welfare. The bipartisan Animal Welfare Forum played a crucial role in supporting the legislation. The act passed on January 9, 2024, with a majority of 208 votes in favor and two abstentions, effectively ending the practice of consuming dog meat in Korea.

Despite the law's passage, concerns remain about its implementation. In March 2024, the WDA's advocacy led to the incorporation of the "International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats" into the U.S. "2024 Appropriations Act."

The WDA delegation visited Korea from May 23-24, meeting with legislators and animal welfare organizations. Discussions focused on promoting the international agreement, incorporating animal protection into school curricula, and embedding animal protection laws in the Korean Constitution. Korean legislators expressed a commitment to advancing these efforts globally.
