Leclanché Powers Madrid Metro's First Hybrid Repair Locomotive (Uromac) with Advanced Battery System
Leclanché SA, a leading provider of energy storage solutions, has supplied two INT-53 ENERGY battery packs for Madrid Metro's first hybrid track repair locomotive. This project marks the first use of lithium-ion batteries in the metro system.
The hybrid locomotive is a significant milestone in Madrid Metro's efforts to modernize its infrastructure and reduce carbon emissions. It underscores Leclanché's growth outside the automotive EV markets, focusing on industrial and heavy-duty applications.
Uromac, the manufacturer of the locomotive, selected Leclanché for its high-quality, safe, and European-made battery technology. The vehicle features maintenance platforms, a crane, rail brakes, and an air-conditioned cabin for six workers.
The locomotive will be displayed at the InnoTrans 2024 rail trade show in Berlin. Leclanché’s INT-53 ENERGY packs provide a reliable and eco-friendly power source, ideal for non-electrified rail routes. The collaboration with Uromac and SGI marks a significant step in electrification of maintenance vehicles.
