Lenzing Unveils Groundbreaking Concept for Sustainable Glacier Protection and Textile Circularity

Lenzing AG, a global leader in regenerated cellulose fibers, has introduced an innovative concept aiming to protect glaciers sustainably while promoting circularity in the textile industry. Under the title “Glacial Threads: From Forests to Future Textiles,” the project was revealed during the International Day of Forests at the United Nations Office in Geneva. It focuses on using biodegradable LENZING™ fibers for geotextiles, which prevent microplastic pollution and can be completely recycled at the end of their lifecycle.

A pilot on Austria's Stubai Glacier demonstrated that covering a small area with LENZING™ fibers saved four meters of ice from melting, according to studies by the University of Innsbruck and Austrian glacier lift operators. Following this success, the initiative expanded to all tourist-used Austrian glaciers in 2023. The project's innovative approach earned it the first place at the Swiss BIO TOP Awards.

Lenzing is extending the project's reach by collaborating with partners in the textile supply chain to recycle used geotextiles into new textile fibers, demonstrating a commitment to circularity and sustainability. The creation of a "Glacier Jacket" from recycled geotextiles illustrates the viability of circular practices in the textile industry. Partnerships with entities like Marchi & Fildi Spa, Candiani Denim, and Blue of a Kind underpin the project's collaborative spirit.

The initiative not only aims to protect glaciers but also serves as a model for sustainability and circular economy in the textile sector, showcasing what collaborative efforts can achieve in the fight against climate change.
