Lower tips: inflation curbs generosity
The latest study by Banque Cler reveals a decrease in tips left in Switzerland. Inflation is the main cause of this trend. In fact, the tighter the budgets, the less Swiss people leave tips. Nevertheless, the quality of service and the friendliness of the staff remain determining factors for the generosity of customers.
The tip amount also varies depending on the final bill. For a 200 CHF bill, the average tip is 9 CHF, while for a 30 CHF bill, it is 2.50 CHF. Digital payment methods also influence this behavior, with dematerialization often being to their disadvantage. Abroad, Swiss people are more generous than at home.
