Manufacturing Sector Leverages 5G Connectivity for Digital Transformation
Recent research conducted by the Manufacturers Alliance Foundation and Verizon Business reveals a significant shift in the manufacturing sector toward digital transformation through 5G connectivity. The study, titled "Connectivity - A Critical Differentiator for Digital Transformation," shows an increasing adoption of private 5G networks among manufacturers, enabling enhanced control, customization, and operational optimization.
The survey of 172 mid to large-cap manufacturing companies in the U.S. indicates a robust move from 2% to a projected 16% adoption of 4G LTE or 5G within the next three years. This growth highlights the sector's drive towards improving operational efficiency and competitiveness through advanced connectivity solutions. Stephen Gold, President and CEO of Manufacturers Alliance, emphasized that connectivity is foundational for manufacturing success in the digital era.
About half of the manufacturers surveyed are integrating wireless connectivity with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and 45% believe that 5G will soon outpace other wireless technologies in impact over the next three to five years. This digital push is supported by a mix of network solutions and strategic technology investments aimed at strengthening the sector’s digital infrastructure.
