Innovative Pyrolysis Plant Launched in Zug
Metall Zug AG and the "Association for the Decarbonization of Industry" inaugurated a methane pyrolysis plant at Tech Cluster Zug. This technology, developed with Empa, involves heating methane in a microwave reactor to generate hydrogen and powdered carbon without emitting CO2. The plant is a key step for reducing industrial emissions and targets the decarbonization of high-temperature processes.
The plant is set to be integrated into regular production by 2026, providing climate-friendly hydrogen for V-ZUG's enameling furnaces, potentially reducing emissions by up to 240 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The process also produces solid carbon, which can be used in construction and agriculture.
Long-term plans include using renewable methane produced with solar energy to achieve negative emissions, further reducing natural gas consumption in Zug and across Europe.
The project, involving funds over CHF 8 million, highlights the collaboration between 16 companies and local government, marking an innovative milestone towards a climate-neutral industry in Switzerland.
