Meyer Burger and Solestial Announce Strategic Partnership for Space Solar Cells
Meyer Burger Technology AG and Solestial Inc. have signed a strategic manufacturing partnership to scale the production of next-generation ultra-thin silicon solar cells for space. The collaboration will leverage Meyer Burger's manufacturing expertise and Solestial's innovative photovoltaic technology to produce high-performance solar cells and modules for spacecraft and space infrastructure projects.
Solestial specializes in radiation-resistant solar cells and flexible modules designed for long-term performance in space. By integrating Meyer Burger's advanced silicon heterojunction technology with Solestial's unique defect engineering, the partnership aims to deliver reliable and efficient solar cells for in-orbit operations.
Under the agreement, Meyer Burger will process Solestial's ultra-thin, radiation-hardened silicon wafers, applying its heterojunction technology. The cells will then be returned to Solestial's facility for metallization and integration into flexible modules. This initiative is expected to supply enough solar modules to power hundreds of spacecraft per year by mid-2025.
This partnership demonstrates a commitment to innovation and collaboration, enabling both companies to support the growing demand for cost-effective and abundant energy in space. The start of production is planned for September 1, 2024.
