Modern Musical "Dongpo: Life in Poems" Makes U.S. Theatre Debut in New York and DC

In March 2024, the U.S. audiences will experience a unique cultural presentation as the modern musical "Dongpo: Life in Poems" debuts at the Kennedy Center in DC and the David H. Koch Theater in New York City's Lincoln Center. This collaboration between the China Oriental Performing Arts Group Co., Ltd. and the MeiShan Song and Dance Theatre aims to highlight the richness of traditional Chinese culture through innovative storytelling and visual art.

Centering on the legendary Su Shi (1037-1101), also known as Su Dongpo, the musical uses a blend of modern choreography, traditional guqin music, and various art forms to explore the emotional and intellectual depth of this historical figure. Su Dongpo's contributions to literature and the arts have made him an iconic figure in Chinese history, celebrated for his philosophical outlook and artistic versatility.

Renowned multidisciplinary artist Shen Wei directs and choreographs the production, integrating Su Dongpo's poetry and prose with contemporary performance techniques. After extensive development, including 19 iterations over 20 months, the final production has garnered critical acclaim for its creative approach to blending ancient culture with modern artistic expression.

The stage presentation of "Dongpo: Life in Poems" aims to create a poetic atmosphere that embodies Su Dongpo's spirit without portraying his life directly. This artistic strategy combines traditional and modern, Eastern and Western elements, offering American audiences a unique artistic experience. The involvement of international talents further enhances the production's appeal, showcasing high-quality choreography, music, and design.

With support from the "Image China" project, the U.S. shows mark an important effort to share Chinese aesthetics on a global stage. Additionally, the musical is slated to tour in France and the Hong Kong and Macao regions, with Meishan leveraging this opportunity to promote its cultural heritage and scenic beauty.
