Multilateralism Engagement Remains High Despite Effectiveness Decline

The Multilateralism Index 2024, launched by the International Peace Institute and the Institute for Economics & Peace, highlights a paradox in the global multilateral system. Despite increased participation, its effectiveness in addressing global challenges has waned.

Key findings reveal a performance decline across all five examined domains: Peace and Security, Human Rights, Climate Action, Public Health, and Trade. Notably, armed conflicts rose from 39 in 2013 to 55 in 2022. Climate commitments fall short of targets, leading to projected emission increases.

Additionally, human rights protections have declined even with increased UN engagement. Public health faced setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, and trade saw decreased performance and participation.

Despite challenges, inclusivity improved with greater NGO engagement and increased women's representation in UN bodies, though the Global South remains underrepresented.
