National Anti-Corruption Commission Thailand Exposes Over 1,500 Corruption Cases
The Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) in Thailand, through its National Corruption Deterrence Center (CDC), has disclosed the identification of 1,553 corruption instances, encapsulating project values in excess of 140 billion baht from January 19, 2022, to January 2024. Mr. Niwatchai Kasemmongkol, the NACC's Secretary-General, emphasized the CDC's pivotal function in monitoring and investigating corruption activities to actively forestall and mitigate corruption.
According to the report, 985 cases are under verification, 339 have been resolved, 169 are in pre-verification stage, and 60 confirmed corrupt activities have been recorded. The majority of these cases, 1,151 in total, concern the scrutiny of procurement and construction in public utility ventures. The NACC states that the cumulative value of scrutinized projects sums up to 146.65 billion baht, funds that could have been compromised without the CDC's rigorous oversight.
Despite the disappointing rank of 108th out of 180 countries in Transparency International's 2023 Corruption Perception Index, with a score of 35 points, the NACC remains resolute in its anti-corruption endeavors. The commission aims for heightened transparency and trade, striving for a corruption-free Thailand and an improved CPI score. The NACC urges Transparency International to disclose survey data sources for targeted and effective issue resolution.
