Nedgia Launches First Reverse-Flow Station in Spain with Waga Energy and PreZero

Nedgia, part of Naturgy Group, has commissioned its first Reverse-Flow station in Capellades, near Barcelona. This enables the WAGABOX® unit at the Can Mata landfill to inject up to 70 GWh of renewable natural gas (RNG) annually into the national network, serving the equivalent of 14,000 households or 200 buses.

The station, crucial for maximizing RNG injection potential, facilitates the transport of RNG produced from the landfill waste to the high-pressure transportation network. The WAGABOX® technology, developed by Waga Energy, converts landfill biogas into RNG, a renewable alternative to conventional natural gas.

The project, initiated on June 20, 2023 by PreZero Spain and Waga Energy, includes a six-kilometer pipeline financed by Waga Energy. The Reverse-Flow technology allows the RNG to be utilized beyond local consumption, aiding in the decarbonization process. The installation can prevent approximately 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Can Mata, covering 78 hectares, is one of Spain's largest landfills, managed by PreZero. It annually generates around 40 million cubic meters of biogas, furthering Spain's energy transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
