Neoen to Build Stage 2 of Western Downs Battery after Signing 200 MW Virtual Battery Contract with AGL Energy
Neoen has signed a 10-year virtual battery contract with AGL Energy in Australia's southwest Queensland region. This agreement covers 200 MW / 400 MWh and supports Stage 1 and the new Stage 2 of Western Downs Battery, each sized at 270 MW / 540 MWh. Neoen has issued notices to Tesla and UGL to commence construction of Stage 2.
Stage 2 will feature 140 Tesla Megapack 2XL units and is set to begin operations in 2026. Located beside Neoen’s 460 MWp solar farm and the under-construction Stage 1 battery, this project aims to enhance the Western Downs Green Power Hub.
The virtual battery contract allows AGL Energy to hedge its customer load with Neoen's software. AGL aims to support its large electricity generation portfolio and transition to renewables. Western Downs Battery will offer a total capacity of 540 MW / 1,080 MWh, delivering grid reliability and frequency services.
