Notable increase in the automobile market in Switzerland in April 2024

In April 2024, despite a difficult economic context, sales of new cars in Switzerland and Liechtenstein saw a significant increase of 10.4%. Total new registrations reached 20,040 vehicles, marking an improvement from 18,150 the previous year, a period affected by parts shortages and delivery problems. Since January, the cumulative number of registrations has shown a slight increase of 0.4% compared to the same period in 2023, representing 77,264 cars put into circulation.

The market shows a continued preference for vehicles with alternative engines, particularly hybrids, which constitute almost 58% of the market share over four months. Electric cars, on the other hand, are stagnating with a market share of 17.6%, a slight decline compared to the previous year. Christoph Wolnik of auto-suisse underlines that, faced with uncertainties particularly due to increases in electricity prices, many consumers prefer to postpone the purchase of new cars or opt for thermal engines. Difficulties in electricity supply are also a notable obstacle to the adoption of electric vehicles in Switzerland.
