Ørsted Completes Construction of Combined Wind and Solar Project in Texas

Ørsted A/S has announced the completion of Helena Energy Center, a 518 MW wind and solar project in Bee County, Texas. The center is now operational, providing renewable energy to over 110,000 homes and businesses annually. This project includes the 268 MW Helena Wind farm and the 250 MWAC Sparta Solar farm, with contracts secured from multiple corporate offtakers.

David Hardy, Executive VP and CEO of Ørsted Americas, highlighted the project’s significance as Ørsted’s first co-located wind and solar initiative, making it the largest in their global onshore portfolio. The project leverages coastal winds and abundant sunlight, bringing reliable energy and economic opportunities to Texas. With Helena Energy Center online, Ørsted’s global onshore portfolio now reaches 4.8 GW.

Ørsted is currently constructing over 1.3 GW of onshore renewable assets, with 1.1 GW expected to become operational in 2024.

A celebration event was held at the facility, attended by partners, landowners, local officials, and the community. Texas Senator Morgan LaMantia praised the project for providing clean power and local benefits, including workforce opportunities and support for public schools. The construction created approximately 500 jobs, with more long-term operations and maintenance jobs to follow.
