Photon Energy Expands in South Africa with 250 MW Solar Hydro Project
Photon Energy NV has announced a major development in South Africa, with a 250 MW solar hydro project in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal. Utilizing RayGen technology, the project features 150 MW of thermal hydro storage. It aims to enhance energy stability and reduce load shedding in the region.
The project is progressing steadily, with the Environmental Impact Assessment due by Q4 2025. The project anticipates achieving a ready-to-build status by Q2 2026. Photon Energy is collaborating with Eskom to integrate the facility into the national grid, facilitating optimal energy distribution and grid stability.
This initiative includes Photon Energy's efforts to secure necessary permits and achieve Strategic Integrated Project status. The RayGen technology offers long-duration energy storage, combining solar power with water-based thermal storage, enabling 12-hour energy dispatch.
