Red Coalition Calls for the Urgent Creation of an Anti-Racism Act in Québec

The Red Coalition urges the Québec Liberal Party, Parti Québécois, and Québec Solidaire to unite for an Anti-Racism Act in Québec. This legislation aims to address racial injustices and hate crimes, providing a framework to combat systemic discrimination and protect marginalized communities.

Recent tensions, notably due to the Israel-Hamas conflict, have led to attacks on religious communities. Current protections are inadequate, highlighting the need for stronger measures. Joel DeBellefeuille, Executive Director of the Red Coalition, emphasized the systemic racial profiling in Québec’s law enforcement, as evidenced by recent legal decisions.

Justice Dominique Poulin’s ruling in a class-action lawsuit confirmed systemic racial profiling within the SPVM. Another case by Justice Michel Yergeau condemned random police stops targeting Black drivers. The CAQ government is currently appealing this ruling.

A viral video of a violent attack by Laval Police further underscores police misconduct. Premier François Legault’s denial of systemic racism only intensifies the need for an Anti-Racism Act.

The Red Coalition calls on opposition leaders to propose this essential legislation. Other provinces have enacted similar laws, enforcing transparency and accountability. The coalition remains committed to advocating for the rights of all citizens and urges prompt political action.
